General Information

Barbeito Boal Reserve 5 Years Old is made from the Portuguese variety boal. Considered one of the 5 best grapes for the great wines of Madeira, its vines grow on the slopes of the volcanic hillsides of the island.

Once fermented to achieve the desired amount of sugar, the wine is fortified and subjected to the traditional Canteiro production process, which involves placing the barrels of Boal Reserve 5 Years Old at the top of the winery, where it is warmer, so that the wine naturally develops an oxidative aging at high temperatures.

Highly appreciated by the English as early as the late 17th century, the peculiar production method of Madeira wines allows them to be long-lasting without altering their qualities.

Barbeito Boal Reserve 5 Years Old (Madeira D.O.P) is a Medium Sweet ready to consume and does not require decanting. It is ideal for pairing with pudding, foie-gras, dark chocolate, candied fruits, and cheeses, and after opening, if stored properly, it will maintain its properties for several months.

Tasting notes

Honey-colored, amber.

It releases an unmistakable aroma of toasted hazelnuts with hints of candied orange peel and cocoa.

On the palate, it presents a medium body, with a silky texture and a warm sensation. The balance between freshness and acidity is very well compensated. The hints of baked apple in its finish are surprising.

The winery

Winery

Of great international prestige, Barbeito is a family winery founded in 1946 by Mário Barbeito de Vasconcelos. Although initially the company was dedicated to the production of glass bottles, over time they became producers of Madeira wines, sourcing grapes from the best viticulturists in the region and crafting them while respecting the traditional method. The success of these wines, already consumed by the English in the 17th century, has made them highly sought-after and appreciated primarily in the international market.

Barbeito currently offers a wide range of wines in three categories: Single Harvest (single-varietal vintage wines made using the traditional canteiro method), Single Cask (from barrels selected for their exceptional quality), and Frasqueira (the jewels of the winery, with over 20 years of maturation).
