Bakeder 2022 is a fine single-varietal Tempranillo from the vineyards of the Viña Real Castrejones and San Ginés winery, located in the Laguardia region. A wine from the CVNE group that is complex, fleshy, long, and with great aging potential, clearly expressing the magnificent terroir of its origin.

Cvne. The winery group has become a benchmark in the wine sector, both within and beyond our borders. Half of the grapes they use come from their own vineyards, while the rest are sourced through contracts with farmers from the finest plots of the D.O.Ca. Rioja.

In state-of-the-art facilities designed by world-renowned architect Philippe Mazières, atop Cerro de la Mesa, lies Viña Real, the winery of the firm in Rioja Alavesa, with nearly a century of history. Here, wines with extraordinary aging potential are conceived and crafted, based on elegance and family values since 1920, such as this Bakeder 2022 we present to you. This single-varietal Tempranillo comes from the winery's own San Ginés and Castejones vineyards, located in the municipality of Laguardia. These plots are situated at an altitude of 550-600 meters above sea level, on clay-limestone soils low in organic matter and with southern exposure, protected by the Sierra de Cantabria.

For the production of Bakeder 2022, the grapes are selected and harvested manually, and once in the winery, after a second selection, they undergo a pre-fermentation maceration in small stainless steel tanks for 48 hours at a temperature of 10º C. After alcoholic fermentation at 27-29º C in the same tanks, the wine macerates hot for 15 to 20 days in contact with the skins before racking. The malolactic fermentation takes place in concrete tanks, and the process concludes with the wine resting in French oak barrels for 10 months for its final refinement.

Creators' opinion

The 2022 harvest started about ten days earlier than in 2021 and almost two weeks earlier compared to the historical average. The vegetative cycle was characterized by intense heat and persistent drought, conditions that reduced yield – fewer clusters and smaller berries – but allowed for grapes in impeccable sanitary condition. In this context, monitoring ripeness and grape tasting were key tools to determine the precise harvest moment, preserving the primary aromas, vibrant acidity, and the fresh character of the wine. The vineyards designated for Bakeder were harvested manually on September 20 and 21, during the third week of the month, under optimal conditions.

The Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España is one of the great symbols of the Estación de Haro neighborhood, the great capital of Rioja wine. Founded in 1879 by the brothers Raimundo and Eusebio Real de Asúa, CVNE (as it is known worldwide) can proudly claim to have remained at the top throughout its history. Ten years after its creation, the winery inaugurated an impressive barrel hall designed by the studio of Alexandre Gustave Eiffel. By 1900, it was already producing nearly 80,000 bottles, an unthinkable feat for the time. The 20th century established CVNE as an institution of Spanish wine.

Over 140 years, it has successfully combined tradition and innovation to create wines that today are the standard-bearers of Rioja reds and have garnered international critical acclaim. Its Imperial Gran Reserva 2004 made history when it was chosen as Wine of the Year 2013 by the prestigious American magazine Wine Spectator, marking the first time a Spanish wine received this recognition.

Since its foundation, CVNE has expanded its heritage and grown with avant-garde projects at different times in its history, such as the creation of Viñedos del Contino or Viña Real.
