Pairing

Azpilicueta Origen Crianza 2021 pairs very well with Iberian cured meats, roast lamb, veal cheeks, and grilled fillet steak. It also complementarily accompanies meat-based rice dishes, sautéed mushrooms, and roasted vegetables, because its balance and long finish support flavourful dishes without losing freshness.

Tasting notes

View

Vivid and attractive cherry red colour, with an intense layer.

Nose

It has an expressive and well-defined nose featuring cherry, plum, blackberry, and blueberry, showcasing an intense and juicy fruit that characterises the wine. Delicate floral notes and a subtle spice background provided by ageing in French oak follow, adding elegant nuances and rounding out the profile with discreet depth.

Mouth

Delicious and smooth mouthfeel, with good structure, where the powerful fruit integrates with a balanced acidity that provides freshness and tension; the palate is broad, with a gentle texture and a finish that leaves memories of ripe fruits and subtle spicy notes. Long and persistent finish.

The winery

Bodegas Azpilicueta

Integrated into the group of wineries of the giant Pernod Ricard, a leader in the production, commercialization, and export of quality wines from Spain to more than 70 countries, Bodegas Azpilicueta was founded in 1881 by Félix Azpilicueta under the original name of Romeral. Since the 1990s, the new technical department of the group has been firmly committed to recovering the essence of aged Rioja wines, choosing Azpilicueta to carry out this wine dissemination endeavor.

In 2001, Azpilicueta inaugurated new facilities: a modern and sustainable building where architecture and cutting-edge winemaking perfectly complement each other. These facilities (where the wines of the Campo Viejo winery, owned by the same group, are also produced) were designed by the renowned Rioja architect Ignacio Quemada.

Bodegas Azpilicueta has 800 hectares of vineyards to work within the D.O.Ca. Rioja. Most of the vineyards supplying the company are located around Fuenmayor, a municipality with an irregular topography that allows work with plots at different altitudes, orientations, and slopes. The renowned winemaker Elena Adell leads the Azpilicueta wine range.
