General Information

Bodegas Viña Somoza, one of the most important wineries in the D.O. Valdeorras. Based in the town of A Rúa in Ourense, it stands out particularly for its mastery of godello, the region's quintessential white grape variety. After showcasing its expertise with exceptional white wines, the winery decided to venture into producing its first red wine, choosing to work with albarello, also known as brancellao, a very rare, delicate, and difficult-to-cultivate grape. Alma Do Vello Tesouro 2022 is their latest vintage, an exceptional wine born from an old vineyard located at 550 meters of altitude in the Rubiá area, on well-drained alluvial soils and surrounded by a chestnut forest.

And if the cultivation of the albarello for Alma Do Vello Tesouro is complex and labor-intensive, its production is no less so. The process included long cold macerations with whole grape clusters, subsequent pressing, and transfer to 400- and 500-liter French oak barrels. Fermentation was carried out with spontaneous yeasts at controlled temperatures, and the aging, without batonnage, lasted 12 months. The final result is a red wine from Valdeorras with an intense color, impressive aromatic potential, and unique flavor. Alma Do Vello Tesouro 2022 pairs perfectly with all kinds of meats, especially roasted dishes and small game. It also pairs well with fatty fish, cheeses, and cured meats.

Tasting notes

It displays a medium-low layer tile color typical of the characteristics of the albarello (brancellao) variety.

On the nose, it is fine and intense. It unfolds aromas of white flowers and fresh red fruit followed by herbaceous and spicy notes.

On the palate, it is agile, direct, fresh, and fluid. An elegant and easy-to-drink wine, with great acidity and a long finish.

Creators' opinion

The winery

Viña Somoza is a small winery established in 2000 in the town of A Rúa de Valdeorras (Orense). Its founder, Víctor Fernández, revived the area's native vineyards and, with these resources and a winemaking approach based on the fusion of tradition and modernity, set out to craft unique wines that keep the Galician essence alive.

The winery, which in 2015 became the property of a sole owner, boasts 15 hectares of vineyards spread across the estates of Redondo, Pedrazais, and Veguiña. The vines, aged between 30 and 60 years, grow on hillside soils composed of slate and granitic sands, nourished by the Sil River. This rich terroir, combined with the microclimate they enjoy, produces excellent raw materials that result in some of the best godellos in Spain.

Bodegas Viña Somoza also exports its wines beyond Spain to countries such as the United States, Canada, Mexico, England, and Germany.
