Abel Mendoza Selección Personal 2022 is a highly expressive red wine that combines depth, freshness and elegance in a precise, balanced style, true to the character of its terroir. A complex, limited-production wine that reflects Abel Mendoza’s artisanal philosophy.
To create this unique wine, each year, Abel Mendoza himself selects a plot or soil whose performance has been most remarkable in that vintage, producing it separately. In this case, Abel Mendoza Selección Personal 2022 is made from tempranillo grapes from Marrate -El Bardallo-, a 50-year-old vineyard located in the municipality of Labastida.
Bodegas Abel Mendoza, founded in 1988 in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, is one of the most personal and acclaimed projects in Rioja. Its philosophy is based on hands-on vineyard work, low yields and the precise interpretation of each individual plot. The Selección Personal range represents its most carefully crafted cuvée, produced only in vintages and from parcels that reach the required quality level.

Vineyard
Description
This wine originates from a selection of plots located in the Rioja Sonsierra, with particular emphasis on the Marrate‑El Bardallo vineyard, in the surroundings of Labastida. The vines are over 50 years old (in some cases up to 70 years according to sources), grown on silty clay‑limestone soils, with moderate yields that enhance grape concentration and quality. The annual selection of the best parcel allows the wine to adapt to the specific conditions of each vintage, reinforcing its unique character and terroir identity.
Tasting notes
Clean with abundant and unctuous tears in sight. It displays a cherry red color with garnet edges.
Medium intensity on the nose.
On the palate, it is dry and structured, offering a pleasant sensation that covers the entire mouth with a balance of complex, pleasant, and fresh sensations.
Founded in 1988 by Abel Mendoza and his wife Maite Fernández, this Rioja winery, located on the left bank of the Ebro River and facing the Sierra Cantabria, began by marketing young wines made using the carbonic maceration technique under the Jarrarte brand. Their drive to develop more complex wines led them, a decade later, to focus on different vinifications from both white and red varieties, with the aim of creating wines with their own personality destined to endure over time.
The vineyards of Abel Mendoza are cultivated on rugged terrains with various compositions (clay-limestone, sandy, and stony soils) and are spread across 42 small plots that the winery harvests manually and works on throughout the year with the utmost respect for the environment.
