Witwe Dr. H. Thanisch

Witwe Dr. H. Thanisch Erben Müller-Burggraef is one of the most emblematic and prestigious wineries in the Mosel, historically inseparable from the legendary Berncasteler Doctor vineyard, considered one of the finest and most expensive white wine vineyards in the world. With more than 375 years of winemaking tradition, the Thanisch name is synonymous with elite Riesling, exceptional longevity and pure Mosel terroir expression.

The estate’s history dates back to the 17th century, although its international reputation was consolidated in the mid-19th century under the direction of Dr. Hugo Thanisch, whose wines achieved worldwide fame and record prices at international auctions. After his premature death, his widow inherited the estate, which became known as Witwe Dr. H. Thanisch. Due to Napoleonic inheritance laws, the estate was later divided among the heirs, incorporating the Müller-Burggraef surname into the winery’s name.

Since then, the estate has preserved its historic identity intact, maintaining a stylistic consistency based on finesse, precision and the longevity of its Rieslings. One particularly memorable milestone was the auction of a Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese 1921 in 1986, which reached the extraordinary sum of 11,200 German marks at the time.

The estate currently cultivates around 16 hectares of vineyards, exclusively distributed across steep, high-quality slopes around Bernkastel. The heart of the estate is the mythical Berncasteler Doctor, a vineyard with extreme slopes (up to 60%), south-southwest exposure and weathered slate-clay soils, planted with vines up to 80 years old.

This spectacular site produces concentrated, spicy and profoundly deep Rieslings, considered for more than a century among the world’s great white wines. Other historic Mosel vineyards such as Bernkasteler Badstube, Bernkasteler Lay and Bernkasteler Graben complement the estate, each offering a different interpretation of Riesling based on variations in soil, exposure and microclimate.

Viticulture in the Mosel is defined by so-called 'heroic viticulture'. The extreme slopes require manual work throughout the year, from pruning to harvest. The winery practices environmentally respectful viticulture, with particular attention to soil care, yield control and achieving optimal physiological ripeness.

The relatively cool Mosel climate, combined with the slate’s ability to store and reflect heat, allows for slow and balanced ripening, key to the wines’ high natural acidity and longevity.

The winery combines state-of-the-art facilities with exceptional historical heritage. Much of the vinification and ageing takes place in the historic 'Doctor cellar', a cellar carved into the rock more than 350 years ago beneath the vineyard, offering ideal natural conditions with constant temperatures of 8-9 °C and high humidity.

The grapes are harvested by hand, whole-cluster pressed and slowly fermented with indigenous yeasts. Vinification is carried out mainly in stainless steel, followed by ageing in traditional 1,000-litre fudres characteristic of the Mosel. Fermentations are long and cool, without additives, resulting in wines of great aromatic complexity and remarkable ageing potential.

Since 2008, the estate has been directed by oenologist Maximilian F. W. Ferger, trained in Geisenheim and with experience in some of Germany’s finest wineries. Ferger has respected the house’s classic style while bringing a contemporary interpretation of Riesling, always prioritising physiological ripeness over analytical parameters and seeking low yields and maximum precision.

Dr. H. Thanisch wines stand out for their balance between concentration and lightness, their deep, saline and spicy aromatic profile, and an ageing capacity spanning decades. The winery produces exclusively Riesling in a broad range of classic Mosel styles, from Kabinett and Spätlese to Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese, as well as dry expressions such as Grosses Gewächs. The cuvées from Berncasteler Doctor represent the pinnacle of the portfolio and are regularly among the highest-rated wines by international critics.
