In the mid-eighties, a group of winegrowers launched Viñedos Mejorantes. By pooling their vineyards in the provinces of Albacete, Ciudad Real, and Toledo, and particularly focusing on cultivating Bordeaux varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, they embarked on producing quality wines with these French varieties. In 1994, the facilities in Villacañas (Toledo), in the area known as "El Portillejo," adopted the name Viñedos Mejorantes. What began as an innovation (they were pioneers) in the Manchego wine sector, the production of single-varietal wines, soon became their hallmark. The winery boasts a large number of estates from which they source the finest fruits. Their Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot plantations, with vines over 20 years old, and the diversity of soils, altitudes, and climates (as the estates are spread across Albacete, Ciudad Real, and Toledo) allow them to create an interesting range of wines by selecting the best fruits from each estate and skillfully blending them (contrary to the current trend of producing wines from a single estate). Under the Portillejo brand, they produce wines that encompass a wide palette of flavors and aromas, designed to meet the demands of a broad range of consumers: from those seeking more modern, young, and casual wines to those preferring more classic, elegant, and sober options. The winery offers red wines with short barrel aging, designed for early consumption, though they allow for a medium aging period.
