In 1985, the Segovian Hernández de Mercado family founded Marqués de Velilla, today one of the benchmark wineries in the D.O. Ribera del Duero. In 1996, it moved to its definitive location in the Burgos region of La Horra, in the heart of Ribera del Duero, where the family had already acquired the fantastic Monte Villalobón estate in 1989. The 183 hectares of estate-owned vineyards, divided into 18 distinct plots, ensure the winery's self-sufficiency, cultivating varieties such as Tinta del País (the majority), Cabernet-Sauvignon, and a small portion of Malbec and Merlot. The climate is sometimes extreme, which contributes to the production of robust and complex wines, full of character and personality. The viticulture philosophy is based on respecting the identity and personality of the soils and using environmentally friendly products that are recognized and approved within the framework of organic farming. The winery produces its range of reds (Marqués de Velilla and Doncel de Mataperras) under the D.O. Ribera del Duero and its whites (Viña de Mercado and Catalina de Mercado) under the D.O. Rueda.
