Château Palmer

Although the wines produced on the estate now occupied by Château Palmer were already known in the 18th century, this winery, classified as a third Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Wine Classification, was founded under the name it carries today in 1814, the year British Lieutenant Colonel Charles Palmer purchased the property.

The château, designed by the famous architect Charles Burguet, was not built, however, until 1856, under the initiative of the Pereire brothers, the next owners of the estate. In 1938, Château Palmer changed hands once again. Four Bordeaux families—the Ginestet, Miailhe, Mähler-Besse, and Sichel families—joined forces to acquire it. This partnership dissolved in 1950, and today the winery, part of the A.O.C. Margaux, belongs to a branch of the Bouteiller-Mähler family. Since 2004, however, its management has been under Thomas Duroux, former winemaker of the Tuscan winery Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia.

Located in the commune of Cantenac, in the Haut-Médoc region, north of Bordeaux, the Château Palmer vineyard spans 55 hectares, mostly situated on a fine gravel plateau along the Gironde estuary. The planted varieties include cabernet sauvignon (47%), merlot (47%), and petit verdot (6%), with vines averaging 38 years of age. From these, the winery produces its grand vin and a second red wine called Alter Ego. Since 2010, they have also added Château Palmer Blanc, a white wine made from white merlot, sauvignon gris, and muscadelle, created to commemorate and pay tribute to the white wine produced by the estate during the 1920s. All these creations share a distinctive style characterized by elegance and finesse.
