The exceptional composition and quality of the soil where its vineyard takes root is one of the hallmarks of Château Malartic-Lagravière, a Grand Cru Classé de Graves winery located on the left bank of Bordeaux, in the town of Léognan.
The very name of the estate, ‘Lagravière,’ refers to the unique nature of its terroir. The 53 hectares of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot, sauvignon blanc, and sémillon are spread across a terrace on an eight-meter-deep gravel ridge dating back to the Quaternary period. This composition facilitates drainage, while the subsoil of limestone, fossils, and clay provides a significant amount of water, ensuring the vines are perfectly supplied, even during drought periods.
Founded in 1850 by Madame Arnaud Ricard, who chose the name in homage to the family of Count Hippolyte de Maurès de Malartic, former owners in the 18th century, the château is one of only six in the region with the rank of Grand Cru Classé for both red and white wines, according to the 1953 Grand Cru Classé classification.
In 1996, the domaine was purchased by the Bonnie family. Under their management, Château Malartic-Lagravière has regained its former glory, thanks to the implementation of the best possible techniques in the vineyard and winery, as well as meticulous precision work.
Balancing tradition and modernity, and with the guidance of renowned winemaker Michel Rolland, the estate undertook the construction of a new winery in 1998. The highlights include a gravity-fed grape transport system, 20 stainless steel tanks, and 10 thermoregulated, tronco-conical wooden vats, enabling parcel-by-parcel vinification.
All of this has further elevated the quality of its wines, which are appreciated by both critics and the public for their structure, complexity, elegance, and aging potential.
