Located in Pauillac, a commune in the Médoc region of Bordeaux, Château Lynch-Bages is especially appreciated for its grand vin, an example of structure and intensity.
The estate comprises 90 hectares of vineyards situated on a plateau west of Pauillac. The soils on which the vineyards are planted consist of gravel, chalk, and sand, which ensure excellent drainage for the vines. Cabernet sauvignon dominates, accounting for 75% of the vines and serving as the star grape of the grand vin, while the rest is divided among merlot, cabernet franc, petit verdot, and the white varieties sémillon, sauvignon blanc, and muscadelle.
Château Lynch-Bages takes its name from Thomas Lynch, an Irish merchant who owned the estate between 1749 and 1824. In 1855, the estate was classified as a fifth Grand Cru in the Bordeaux wine classification.
Today, the Cazes family owns the winery, managing it through the Société Jean-Michel Cazes, alongside other notable French estates such as Cordeillan-Bages, also in Pauillac, Ormes de Pez in Saint-Estèphe, and Villa Bel-Air in Graves.
Jean-Michel Cazes, the figure after whom the current company is named, has successfully maintained the estate's privileged position among the most important wineries in the A.O.C. Pauillac, a status achieved in the mid-1950s under the leadership of his grandfather, Jean-Charles Cazes.
