Château Léoville Poyferré

Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the three wineries that emerged from the division of Léoville, which was, from the mid-17th century until the French Revolution, the largest wine estate in the Médoc. Located in the commune of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle, the property was established in 1840 from the new division of what was then Château Léoville-Las Cases. Its name was taken from its new owner, Baron Jean-Marie Poyferré de Cerès.

After a few more changes of ownership, Château Léoville Poyferré has belonged, since 1920, to the Cuvelier family. This family has been responsible for giving the estate a new boost, restoring the prestige and brilliance that led it to be classified as a Second Grand Cru Classé in the Bordeaux Wine Classification of 1855.

Over the last three decades, the domaine has undergone numerous improvements, including the optimization and restructuring of its 80-hectare vineyard, planted with cabernet sauvignon, merlot, petit verdot, and cabernet franc, as well as the adoption of the latest technical advancements in the winery. These investments, along with the exceptional soil in which its vines grow—composed, as in the rest of the A.O.C. Saint-Julien, of pebbles that naturally regulate soil temperature, gravel, sand, and clay—and the expertise and skill of a team of professionals advised by the renowned winemaker Michel Rolland, contribute to the production of elegant, refined, balanced, and complex red wines, with a velvety texture and excellent aging potential.
