Château d’Issan

Classified as a Third Grand Cru in the official Bordeaux Classification of 1855, Château d'Issan is a winery located in Cantenac, one of the towns included in the A.O.C. Margaux, in the Haut-Médoc.

Famous for its silky reds with great aromatic richness, the estate is one of the oldest in this wine region and even in all of Bordeaux. In fact, it was already referenced in 1152, as it was served at the wedding celebrations of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry II of England.

Château d'Issan has had many owners throughout its history, all of whom contributed to shaping the unique character of its renowned wines. In 1575, under the leadership of the d’Essenault family, the estate adopted the name that has endured to this day. Since 1945, the Cruse family has been at the helm of the winery. Today, Emmanuel Cruse, the third generation of the family, is responsible for its management.

The estate, where the château built in the 18th century is located, covers a vineyard area of 59 hectares planted with cabernet sauvignon (70%) and merlot (30%). These varieties are used to produce the grand vin, also called Château d'Issan, and a second wine, Blason d'Issan, which comes from the fruit of younger vines and, being more fruit-forward, can be enjoyed earlier than is typically the case for reds from the Médoc.
