Behind its name, synonymous with the highest distinction and refinement, lies what many experts consider the best winery in Saint-Émilion. Château Cheval Blanc boasts the top classification of this Bordeaux appellation, Premier Grand Classé A, since 1855.
Although vine cultivation in this area dates back to the 14th century, the official foundation of Château Cheval Blanc, located in the northwest of the region, on the border with neighboring Pomerol, is dated to 1832, when the Ducasse family acquired part of the vineyard of Château Figeac. In the same century, the family lineage was linked to the Laussac-Fourcaud through a matrimonial union. Thus began a new era, marked by the first distinctions for their wines with medals at the universal exhibitions of London and Paris in 1862 and 1867, respectively.
After more than a century under the ownership of the Laussac-Fourcaud family, the estate was sold in 1998 to Bernard Arnault, president of the French luxury giant LVMH, and Belgian businessman Albert Frère. Currently, Pierre Lurton is responsible for managing the winery's direction, a role he also holds at another iconic estate, also owned by LVMH: the legendary Château d'Yquem of Sauternes.
With an area of 39 hectares, divided into a mosaic of 45 plots with soils dominated by clay and gravel, Cheval Blanc's vineyard features an uncommon percentage of cabernet franc (specifically, it accounts for 57% of the total), for which it is globally renowned. Merlot is the second most planted variety on the estate (40%), with the remainder consisting of small plots of malbec and cabernet sauvignon. From these grapes, two sublime red wines are crafted: its aromatic, fruity, elegant, and long-lived grand vin, and the second wine, Le Petit Cheval.
