In 2012, the Mallorcan entrepreneur Miguel Pascual, connected to the hospitality sector and descending from a family of winemakers, decided to venture into the world of wine and create his own winery to produce high-quality wines that would promote the name of Mallorca. Two years later, he inaugurated Bodegas Vi Rei, a winery located on the Sa Bassa Plana estate in the municipality of Llucmajor, in the south of the island. The renowned Mallorcan architect Rafael Munar was responsible for designing the facilities.
Bodegas Vi Rei is equipped with the latest technology; for example, it is one of the few wineries in Mallorca that has a tangential filter, which optimizes wine filtration and reduces waste. Additionally, it has the largest vineyard in Mallorca: 95 hectares, all located on the same estate, Sa Bassa Plana, next to the winery. The vineyard is planted in trellis and has a drip irrigation system. It features both native and foreign grape varieties: 5 white varieties—prensal, giró ros, malvasía, chardonnay, and sauvignon blanc—and 5 red varieties—callet, manto negro, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and syrah. It is also experimenting with other native varieties, such as escursac and gorgollasa, but these have not yet been vinified. Each variety is processed separately.
Vi Rei produces a wide range of wines: whites, rosés, reds, and sparkling wines. These are aromatic and complex wines with a slight saline aroma due to the vineyard's proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, just 500 meters away. The soil of the estate is mainly rocky, so for the vineyard's plantation, rocks were broken to a depth of more than 1 meter. The vines were planted in these trenches, where they draw nutrients and water. This particularity gives the vineyard great resilience. Vi Rei is also known for its extensive wine tourism offerings, which include accommodations in its own hotel within the estate.
