The oenologists Patrick Mata and Alberto Orte, whose partnership led to the creation of the Compañía de Vinos del Atlántico in 2002—a winemaking giant present in 18 appellations of origin across Spain and Portugal—join forces again with Bodegas Poniente, their new project in the Marco de Jerez.
Mata and Orte's constant pursuit of exceptional vineyards with traditional grape varieties to craft outstanding wines lies at the heart of this new venture. The winery manages three small plots of pure albariza soils (San Cristóbal, San José, and El Aljibe) in the renowned Pago de Añina, one of the finest in the entire D.O. Jerez-Xérès-Sherry y Manzanilla-Sanlúcar de Barrameda.
Among the 21 different varieties organically cultivated on these 16 hectares of vineyards, old clones of palomino fino stand out, some of which are over 60 years old. These are used to produce a fino, an amontillado, and an old oloroso aged for more than 30 years, capturing the essence of the south.
