Bodegas Mas Alta

A Belgian –owner– and a Frenchman –winemaker– have brought Mas Alta to the elite of Priorat in record time, earning critical acclaim. They seek the identity of the terroir in the traditional varieties Cariñena and Garnacha from century-old vines that extract the essence of unique slate soils. In 1999, Bodegas Mas Alta was founded, a project conceived by Michel and Christine Vanhoutte and their partners, with the aim of producing great wines that combine authenticity and elegance in the Priorat region. To achieve this, they began planting 32 hectares of vineyards, meticulously selecting the plots, and collaborated with French winemakers Michel Tardieu and Philippe Cambie. The vineyards of Mas Alta are located in La Vilella Alta (in Priorat), on slate soils, with the main varieties being Cariñena and Garnacha (traditional to the region), as well as Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. From these young vineyards –and from grapes sourced from old vines, 50 years or older, purchased from local growers– they produce wines of great expression, combining strong character and elegance.
