Founded in 2015 in Murero (Zaragoza), Bodega Sommos Garnacha is a small project focused on recovering and crafting wines from old Garnacha vines, seeking to highlight the personality of the different ‘terroirs’ of the area. These old Garnacha vines, native to this region, were on the verge of disappearing, abandoned by many winegrowers due to the challenges of cultivating them. Sommos Garnacha has managed to gather and preserve a valuable heritage: 165 hectares of vineyards located on slatey slopes and spread across several areas: Murero, Acered, Atea, Orcajo, Daroca… A large part of these vineyards consists of old Garnacha vines, between 40 and 100 years old. These vines form a perfect communion with the poor soils, digging deep with their roots in search of nutrients to impart minerality and freshness to the wines. This combination (old vines + poor soils) results in low yields but exceptional quality.
Moreover, the extreme climate of the region, with significant temperature variations, and the high altitude at which the vines grow (between 850 and 1,100 m), create ideal conditions for viticulture and slow ripening processes that greatly benefit Garnacha. The winery features functional and modest facilities where every step of the process is carried out in an artisanal manner and follows a minimally interventionist philosophy, starting with manual and selective harvesting and concluding with carefully measured aging in medium-toast French oak barrels. Everything is designed to produce wines that greatly respect the fruit, are smooth and elegant, easy to drink, and highly unique.
