Abadía Retuerta

Abadía Retuerta

The Abadía Retuerta winery is located on an estate where viticultural tradition had existed in the past, and the company Novartis was convinced that it was worth restoring. The location couldn’t be better: Abadía Retuerta is situated in the Valladolid municipality of Sardón de Duero, in the Ribera del Duero’s Golden Mile, one of the most renowned wine regions in the country. The estate -spanning 700 hectares- currently houses 180 hectares of vineyards (only the best ‘terroirs’ were planted), and its first wines were produced with the 1996 vintage. Since June 2022, Abadía Retuerta has held the highest distinction regulated under the Wine Law: the Denominación de Origen Protegida de Vino de Pago.

The evolution of the vineyard and meticulous fieldwork –yield limitation, etc.– have turned this winery into one of the most prestigious in the Duero region. Its wines -among them, some of the country’s finest varietals- are crafted by winemakers Ángel Anocíbar and the French consultant Pascal Delbeck, and receive the highest ratings each year in specialized guides. The Abadía Retuerta vineyard is planted at varying altitudes reaching up to 850 m and is divided into 54 plots or parcels, reflecting the diversity of the soils. Each parcel is cultivated with the variety best suited to it, and is worked and vinified separately to produce wines that are a true expression of each ‘terroir.’

Integrated into the vineyard stands the winery, one of the most innovative and technologically advanced in Europe. Enotourism is an added value of Abadía Retuerta: the estate also houses the impressive 12th-century monastery of Santa María de Retuerta, restored to host the luxury hotel LeDomaine, whose restaurant -advised by Andoni Luis Aduriz- boasts 1 Michelin Star.
