Ribera del Guadiana

The D.O. encompasses six wine-growing regions in Extremadura, distinguishing six different subzones: Cañamero, located southeast of Cáceres, in the heart of the Sierra de Guadalupe. The vineyards grow on slopes, the terrain is rugged, and the soils are poor and slatey. The climate is mild, with no major thermal contrasts. In Montánchez, the orography is complex (hills and small valleys), and the vineyards are established on acidic brown soils. The climate is continental. Ribera Alta occupies the floodplains of the Guadiana and the plains of La Serena and Campo de Castuera. The soils are very sandy. Ribera Baja has a continental climate with moderate Atlantic influence and minimal climatic variations. The soils are clayey-silty. Matanegra presents a climate similar to Tierra de Barros, with some minor differences. Tierra de Barros is located in the center of the province of Badajoz and is the largest region. The lands are flat, the soils fertile and rich in nutrients, with a high capacity for water retention.

Climate
Continental with moderate Atlantic influence. In Tierra de Barros, the driest area, rainfall ranges between 350-450 mm annually, while in the Cañamero area it is around 750-800 mm per year, where the climate is also mild and does not present significant thermal contrasts.
Soil
It varies depending on the area. In Tierra de Barros, there are large plains and moderate altitudes. In Ribera Alta, the soils are clayey; in Ribera Baja and Matanegra, they are clayey-silty; and in Cañamero and Montánchez, the areas with the highest altitudes, the soils are brown-calcareous.
