El Hierro
Although the D.O. extends across the entire island, the main cultivation areas are Valle del Golfo, Sabinosa, El Pinar, and Echedo. White wines make up the majority of wine production.
The main grape varieties cultivated are listán negro, bermejuelo, gual, listán blanco, malvasía, negramoll, verdello, verijadiego blanco, and verijadiego negro.
Climate
Generally mild climate (between 18 ºC in winter and 28 ºC in summer), with higher humidity levels in the upper parts of the mountain. Subtropical climate in the Valle del Golfo and more Mediterranean in El Pinar and Echedo. Good annual average of sunshine hours. Low rainfall.
Soil
Volcanic-sandy soils with good moisture retention capacity. Volcanic ash soils known as "jable" can be found.
