Campo de Calatrava

In February 2024, the D.O. Campo de Calatrava is officially established following approval by the European Union.

The area includes 16 municipalities in the center of the province of Ciudad Real (most of which also belong to the D.O. La Mancha). Its main distinguishing feature is its volcanic soils. In total, it covers 13,500 hectares of vineyards, and to date, 6 wineries have joined this new designation. The average altitude of the area is around 600 m.

The authorized grape varieties are the red ones: tempranillo (known as cencibel in the area), cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah, bobal, petit verdot, cabernet franc, graciano, garnacha tintotera, and malbec; and the white ones: airén, macabeo, verdejo, chardonnay, moscatel de grano menudo, sauvignon blanc, riesling, moscatel de alejandría, gewürztraminer, viognier, and albariño.

These grapes are used to produce white, rosé, red, sparkling wines, and wines from overripe grapes. The types of ‘classic white and red wine’ are added for those fermented in concrete, ceramic, or clay vats.
