It extends across the province of Murcia, encompassing the municipalities of Bullas, Calasparra, Caravaca de la Cruz, Cehegín, Lorca, Moratalla, Mula, Pliego, Ricote, Cieza, and Totana. Cehegín, Mula, and Ricote, along with several estates in Calasparra, Moratalla, and Lorca. The Denomination of Origin was granted in 1994. In this denomination, the main variety is monastrell. According to its regulations, all red and rosé wines must contain at least 60% of this grape.
Climate
Mediterranean climate with scarce rainfall (although occasionally there are heavy storms and downpours) and an average annual temperature of around 16 ºC.
Soil
The terrain is rugged, with small valleys that have their own microclimates. Three zones are clearly distinguished: one to the north-northeast, with an altitude between 400-500 meters; another in the center (500-600 meters of altitude); and a third in the western and northwestern part, between 500 and 810 meters of altitude, where the highest concentration of vineyards and the best quality are found.
