Professional career
In 1994, he traveled to Australia to work at the winery of the prestigious Australian winemaker John Cassegrain, in Hastings River, where his love affair with white wines began. In the summer of that same year, he returned to the family winery, and two years later, his father appointed him technical director. In 1997, Rafael applied all his Australian learning and crafted Placet, a single-varietal Viura wine that achieved immediate critical and public success. Encouraged by this recognition, the youngest of the Palacios lineage decided to settle in Valdeorras and produce wines with the native varieties Godello and – to a lesser extent – Treixadura. The result, As Sortes, was considered from its inception as one of the best white wines in Spain. Louro do Bolo, his second creation, is following the same path.

Training
He studied Enología in Montagne-St. Emilion (Bordeaux) and interned during the harvest at Château Pétrus and Château Moulin du Cadet.
