Professional career

Marcos Eguren is one of the best winemakers in Spain, the author of a catalog of internationally renowned wines such as La Nieta, Amancio, Finca El Bosque, and Teso La Monja. Currently, Marcos and his brother Miguel Ángel are the owners of the Viñedos y Bodegas Sierra Cantabria group, with wineries in Rioja and Toro. Marcos (vice president and winemaker) and Miguel Ángel (president) are the two male descendants of Guillermo Eguren, founder of the Sierra Cantabria winery (1957) in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Marcos joined the family winery in the late seventies.

His first success was improving the quality of carbonic maceration reds, resulting in Murmurón. Later, Marcos made the leap to producing great aged red wines. After Sierra Cantabria, Marcos and his brother Miguel Ángel created a series of key projects in the revolution that shook Rioja wine in the nineties: Señorío de San Vicente (1991) and Viñedos de Páganos (1998). Additionally, the group includes the wineries Teso La Monja (D.O. Toro) and Dominio de Eguren (IGP Vinos de la Tierra).

Marcos Eguren was named Winemaker of the Year 2023 by the renowned British critic Tim Atkin MW and nominated as Best Winemaker in the World by Wine Enthusiast.
