Jorge Ordóñez

Professional career
Native of Málaga, Jorge Ordóñez began his career as a Spanish wine exporter in the United States in 1987. Today, he is the most important exporter of Spanish wines in the American market. At a time when wine from our country was little more than Rioja and Jerez for Americans, Jorge Ordóñez managed to showcase the potential and variety of our wines, being the first to introduce wines such as albariño, txakolí, or godello whites to the U.S.

Jorge Ordóñez’s work has been recognized with significant accolades: he has been named “Wine Personality of the Year in the U.S.” twice by the guru Robert Parker; he was awarded The Golden Grape Award in 1997 by Food&Wine Magazine; and in Spain, he received the 1997 Víctor de la Serna National Gastronomy Award granted by the Spanish Academy of Gastronomy, among other honors.

His entry into the world of winemaking began with the creation of the OroWines group in 2002. Now retired from the OroWines company, today Jorge Ordóñez leads various projects located in different regions of Spain, such as Bodegas Ordóñez (Montsant, Ribera del Duero, Toro, and Rueda), Volver (La Mancha, Jumilla, and Alicante), etc. All of these projects share a focus on Spanish native grape varieties and the preservation of the scarce heritage of old vineyards.
