Professional career
Gerardo Méndez Lázaro was born in Meaño (Pontevedra) in 1954. The son of a local blacksmith passionate about wine, he decided to study oenology to take charge of a family vineyard where some vines are two centuries old. In 1973, he founded the winery that bears his name, and in 1986, the same year the D.O. Rías Baixas was established (in whose foundation he actively participated), he labeled the wine he had been producing for years, the popular Albariño Do Ferreiro ("of the blacksmith," as that was his father's trade and how he was known).
