Until two or three decades ago, in Spain there was a culture of large wineries that bought grapes from many small vineyards, but the European culture is based on estates; all the great wines of Bordeaux (France) are estate wines. That is the concept that has inspired much of my work.
Professional career
Carlos Falcó has been a pioneer in countless factors related to the quality of the wines he produces at his estate, Dominio de Valdepusa. He was the first modern winemaker to bring and plant foreign grape varieties such as Syrah and Petit Verdot in the Montes de Toledo. He received advice for his plantations from Richard Smart and in oenology from Michel Rolland. His vineyards are a garden filled with technology applied to viticulture. He was a driving force behind the creation of the Vinos de Pago and the first to discover the potential hidden in the Montes de Toledo, where many other winemakers have since established themselves in search of quality and differentiation for their wines. He was associated with Grupo Arco and currently owns another winery, El Rincón, in the D.O. Vinos de Madrid.
