General Information

Distinguished, fruity, floral, and mineral, La Viña Escondida 2020 is the most structured and complete vintage of a wine that serves as a fine example of the typical Garnacha varietals from central Spain. The perfect and harmonious combination of a unique terroir and vineyard, cultivated organically, and meticulous winemaking.

As its name suggests, La Viña Escondida was born from the best plot owned by Bodegas Canopy at the top of a hill in the area of El Real de San Vicente (Toledo). Exposed to the four cardinal points and, therefore, to different levels of sunlight, the Garnacha grapes selected for its production achieved optimal ripeness and a distinctive mineral touch, provided by the granitic soils where they grew. Once in the winery, the whole clusters underwent a 10-day cold pre-fermentation maceration. Subsequently, traditional foot treading was carried out during fermentation, followed by malolactic fermentation, which took place in a new 2000-liter French oak foudre. Finally, the wine was transferred to barrels where it aged for 18 months.

La Viña Escondida 2020 is an elegant red wine, with great depth, longevity, and smoothness on the palate, hallmarks of the winery founded in 2004 in Camarena. These qualities make it one of the most attractive red wines of the D.O. Méntrida.

Tasting notes

Medium layer and bright, lively ruby color.

On the nose, it showcases great complexity, dominated by aromas of red and black fruits (cherry, raspberry, blackberry, and plums), violets, gunpowder, smoky notes, incense, and woods. A well-integrated ensemble with mineral hints.

Broad, silky, elegant, and very fresh on the palate. Easy to drink, with polished and pleasant tannins and a mineral touch. Long and velvety finish.

The winery

Bodegas Canopy is a young winery founded in 2004 in Camarena (Toledo), the result of the initiative of Belarmino Fernández and Alfonso Chacón, two winemaker friends with extensive professional experience in the wine world as well as the business and hospitality sectors.

With the idea of rediscovering for the public the historic terroir encompassed by the D.O. Méntrida, they began searching for old garnacha vineyards, the dominant variety in the area, and modern plantations of the foreign syrah variety on which to base their project.

Currently, Bodegas Canopy owns a total of 19 hectares of vineyards: 11 hectares of garnacha vines aged between 40 and 90 years, located in the area of El Real de San Vicente; and the remaining 8 hectares of syrah, between 16 and 20 years old, are planted in trellis on sandy soils in the same municipality of Camarena. All the vineyards of this Toledo-based winery are cultivated following the principles of organic viticulture, respecting to the fullest the particularities of each variety.

The winemaking process at Canopy includes a selection table, the traditional grape treading, cold pre-fermentation maceration, early racking, malolactic fermentation, and aging in barrels of various sizes. Canopy’s production is based on the utmost respect for the grapes in the winery. Under the D.O. Méntrida, the winery markets six single-varietal red wines: Tres Patas, Malpaso, La Viña Escondida, Congo, Castillo de Belarfonso, and Loco.
