General Information

Sòtil 2020 is an attractive and different single-varietal wine from Mallorca designed by Bodega Mesquida Mora, a winery founded in 2012 in the town of Porreres. Originality, elegance, and finesse are just three of the qualities of this 100% callet red wine.

The young winemaker Bárbara Mesquida Mora is the driving force behind this increasingly consolidated project, despite its still short trajectory. The authenticity and high quality of her creations underpin its solidity, and this Sòtil 2020 is a good example of it. Mesquida Mora bets on biodynamic viticulture and winemaking, which includes, for example, the use of medicinal plant infusions to preserve the health of the vineyard, or the preference for carrying out all tasks manually.

From these premises, Sòtil 2020 was born - which in Catalan refers to the structure that separates two floors - the brilliant culmination of a production process that included the strict hand selection of the best callet clusters from 67-year-old vines; a long post-fermentative maceration of the same and its malolactic fermentation in wood; and a final aging in French oak barrels. All these steps resulted in a subtly floral, light, persistent, and limited production red wine from V.T. Mallorca.

Tasting notes

Intense cherry color.

On the nose, it stands out for its delicacy and aromatic finesse, with floral notes, especially of violets.

Light and fresh on the palate, but also full of nuances. Persistent and sweet.

The winery

Bodega Mesquida Mora is a young Mallorcan winery born from the passion for wine of philologist and winemaker Bárbara Mesquida Mora. Although it was founded in 2012, the winery, based in the town of Porreres, is the heir to an important family winemaking tradition that dates back to 1945. It was in that year when her grandfather, a modest farmer cultivating apricots and vineyards on his small lands, decided to start producing his own wine due to the low prices he received for selling his grapes.

Bárbara's father inherited the company, which, under the name Jaume Mesquida, gained great prominence on the island, being a pioneer in introducing foreign varieties such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and syrah. Between 2004 and 2012, the young winemaker worked intensively in the family business until she decided to venture out on her own.

Mesquida Mora builds its project on respecting the family wine heritage of its founder and owner, starting with the choice of the winery's name, taken from her paternal and maternal surnames, and on 20 hectares of biodynamic vineyard. A significant part of this vineyard is made up of old vines over 40 years of age of those foreign varieties, while the rest consists of native varieties such as prensal, giró (or garnacha), callet, and manto negro. With all these, the winery produces wines under the protected geographical indication of V.T. Mallorca, aiming to express their full potential: three reds, two whites, and two rosés that stand out for their vibrancy and truly appealing authenticity.
