Sonsierra Viñedo de Altura 2023 is a Tempranillo that expresses with freshness and precision the character of the old vines of the Son Sierra Riojan region. It is an elegant, modern red wine with very limited production that has been aged for 9 months in concrete without passing through oak barrels. Don’t miss it!
Sonsierra Viñedo de Altura 2023 does not rely on oak ageing as many Riojas do; here the character arises from the vineyard and is refined in concrete. It is a single-varietal Tempranillo, produced with low-temperature fermentation and nine months of lees ageing on fine lees in concrete tanks, without passage through oak barrels.
It comes from a selection of old vineyards situated at over 550 metres of altitude, on the slopes of the Cantabria Range. The Atlantic influence and the surroundings of the Sonsierra favour a slow ripening of the grape, in a landscape that explains much of the character of this red with a precise and contemporary profile.
Bodegas Sonsierra, the landmark of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, signs this modern interpretation of the terroir. With a very limited production, Sonsierra Viñedo de Altura 2023 sums up well the new reading of Rioja: more tied to the origin, more refined in the winery and with an identity marked by the high-altitude vineyards.

Winemaking
The malolactic fermentation is carried out at low temperature in concrete tanks, a choice that helps preserve the aromatic purity of Tempranillo and to define a finer, more expressive and contemporary profile. Afterwards, the wine remains on fine lees in the same tanks, where it gains body and balance without losing its tension or identity.

Sonsierra Viñedo de Altura 2023 comes from a selection of old vineyards located at over 550 metres above sea level, on the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria. The Atlantic influence of this area promotes a slow and precise ripening of the grape, giving rise to a wine with a fresh, expressive and very balanced profile.

It has an intense ruby red colour with purplish tinges, clean and bright.
Nose
Fragrant and expressive nose, marked by powerful aromas of ripe red fruit such as blackberry and strawberry, together with an elegant hint of black liquorice. A fresh, complex and very precise aroma profile that foresees a vibrant wine with great finesse.
Mouth
On the palate it is expressive and full of nuance, with a very balanced profile and a sense of depth that prolongs the finish. Its mouthfeel is elegant and smooth, and very gastronomic. A modern red with good structure and a persistent finish.
Located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Bodegas Sonsierra produces wines exclusively from its own vineyard, 100% within the same village. Bodegas Sonsierra boasts a long history of crafting high-end wines. The winery was established in 1962 through the initiative of a group of local winegrowers who decided to pool their vineyards to fulfill their dream: to create a great winery in Rioja Alta. Thus, it began as a farmers' cooperative and to this day retains its associative character. Sonsierra wines are origin, landscape, history, and tradition.
In February 2022, Bodegas Sonsierra was awarded the title of ‘Cooperative of the Year’ in the ‘Rioja 2022 Special Report’ by the renowned British critic Tim Atkin MW.
