From the same vineyard cultivated by Carthusian monks in the Middle Ages, Scala Dei Masdeu 2018 is a single-vineyard Reserva red wine that revives ancestral winemaking techniques and showcases the different expressions of garnacha depending on its soil, altitude, and production.

Scala Dei Masdeu 2018 recovers the traditional winemaking heritage of Priorat. In the same way it was done in the 1970s, this Reserva red wine has been vinified from Garnacha Tinta grown on the slopes of Montsant, in a terraced vineyard with southeast orientation and different soil compositions: clay soils in the lower terraces give way to others with a higher limestone content as we reach the costers at higher altitudes, about 800 meters above sea level.
The fruits of the Masdeu vineyard were harvested in small boxes and, once crushed, fermented with 100% of the stems. The wine fermented in a 3500-liter concrete tank, mimicking the temperature peaks typical of fermentations of the past century, without the addition of yeast, and underwent pressing and aging for 19 months, for its final refinement, in that same tank. The result is this Scala Dei Masdeu 2018, a red wine from the D.O.Q. Priorat that is fresh, with chewy tannins and a savory finish.
Cradle of Priorat wine, the origins of the Cellers de Scala Dei winery date back to the 19th century when, following the Mendizábal disentailment, the families of the current owners acquired the lands of the Cartuja de Escaladei and were the first to bottle wine in Priorat.
The facilities are located in former dependencies of the Carthusians. The aging cellar is a 17th-century construction, situated in the emblematic building where the procurator of the Cartuja lived.
