The red wine Scala Dei Cartoixa 2019 is the most emblematic of the winery and a link of continuity with the vineyards that the monks already tended in the Middle Ages. This wine, the first to be bottled under the D.O.Q Priorat, is made from a selection of Garnacha and Cariñena from the best plots in the region, vinified separately to preserve their typicity and the expression of their terroir.

General Information

The red wine Scala Dei Cartoixa 2019 is named in honor of the monks who guarded the vineyards surrounding the Scala Dei monastery since the year 1163. A pioneer in being bottled under the D.O.Q Priorat designation, it is a coupage of garnacha and cariñena selected from the best old vineyards, around 60 years old, settled on the typical licorella slopes of Priorat.

Hand-harvested, the fermentation of the varieties was carried out separately to preserve the typicity of vineyards located at different altitudes and with soils of varying composition. The production of Scala Dei Cartoixa concluded with aging in 1400-liter foudres, 500-liter barrels, and 2100-liter cement tanks. The result is a fragrant red wine with a marked mineral character, typical of slate, which is powerful, unctuous, with good structure, and features intense, mature tannins.

Scala Dei Cartoixa 2019 is a wine from the D.O.Q Priorat that pairs well with hearty dishes like stews or casseroles. It is especially suitable with game meats, barbecues, and cured cheeses, Iberian ham, and other cold cuts.

Tasting notes

Dark, intense cherry with violet reflections.

Intense nose of ripe black fruits and plums with notes of violets over a pronounced mineral background provided by the llicorella from Priorat. Spicy touches from its time in oak.

Unctuous and powerful on the palate, with intense mature tannins, good body, and a persistent, long finish.
