Several centuries of family tradition, old vineyards and the masterful hand of winemaker José Hidalgo underlie the Rioja La Sacedilla 2019: the new wine from Bodegas Pastor Díaz, a free-style Tempranillo from an Excellent vintage, with a generic back label. It comes from grapes grown on a single estate located on the slope of mount Yerga, one of the most exclusive parts of Rioja, and has been barrel aged for 12 months.

The Gonzalo Pastor family has made the most of the Excellent 2019 vintage to launch this new label: La Sacedilla 2019. It’s a single-varietal created from Tempranillo grapes from a single estate: La Sacedilla, which spans 5 hectares and is based on the slope of mount Yerga, a sought-after area of the D.O.Ca. Rioja. Here the firm cultivates old vines in low-yielding, pebbly, calcareous-clay soils.
Growth was monitored until the grapes attained optimum phenolic ripeness. Harvesting was carried out at night to ensure low temperatures. The grapes were carefully destemmed and pressed, followed by fermentation in small tanks and measured pumping over to achieve good colour extraction and smooth, ripe tannins. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged for 12 months in American and French barrels followed by at least 6 months in the bottle.
Bodegas Pastor Díaz was established in 1994 in Aldeanueva del Ebro by the Gonzalo Pastor family, who have been growing grapes for a century. Generation after generation, they’ve selected the best terroirs and now control more than 100 hectares of vineyards chiefly located on the best estates in the foothills of Mount Yerga. The firm has recruited one of the most highly reputed winemakers in Spain: José Hidalgo.
La Sacedilla 2019 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is ideal with gelatinous dishes such as lambs’ trotters with wild mushrooms.
Intense aromas of ripe black fruit (blackberry and plum) with hints of wild blue flowers harmonise with a perfect blend of American and French oak background notes with dominant spices (vanilla, coconut and clove). Potent, fresh palate with good acidity, balanced, flavourful, lively sweet tannins, notes of black liquorice, good length and a finish brimming with aromatic sensations.
Pastor Díaz is a family-owned winery located in the Rioja town of Aldeanueva del Ebro. The family has been dedicated to viticulture for several centuries, and interestingly, the last four generations have been led by men with the same name: Gonzalo Pastor. Over time, the family has acquired the best types of soils, altitudes, and the most optimal orientations for their vineyards. In the winery, there is maximum respect for traditional winemaking. Their range of wines includes young reds, crianzas, reservas, gran reservas, and an organic wine, and it is composed of three brands: Castroviejo, Valdejimena, and Castro Real.
Currently, Bodegas Pastor Díaz manages around 130 hectares of vineyards located mainly on the slopes of Mount Yerga, one of the most exclusive areas for vine cultivation in the D.O.Ca. Rioja. Seventy percent of the vines are grown on trellises, while the remaining 30% are cultivated in the traditional bush vine method. The vineyard's altitude ranges between 350 and 600 meters. The winery primarily cultivates tempranillo, along with a small amount of garnacha and graciano.
