Heir to a lineage connected to the Rioja Alavesa vineyard for two generations, Carlos San Pedro offers you his red wine Pujanza Valdepoleo 2021.
Currently, Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza embodies what Carlos San Pedro aspired to since childhood: owning a vineyard with limited production that allows the crafting of high-quality wines like the one we now present to you, Pujanza Valdepoleo 2021.
A single-varietal tempranillo from the Valdepoleo estate, which is divided into 7 parcels based on orientation, exposure, and sunlight; together, they represent the essence of the vineyards of Laguardia. The most emblematic red wine of San Pedro, a true village wine from the most coveted locality for vine cultivation in the homeland, and a flagship of the finest Rioja Alavesa.
The San Pedro family name is intrinsically linked to wine production in Rioja Alavesa, for at least three generations, when Carlos San Pedro's grandfather was widely recognized by his fellow Laguardia villagers as the owner of some of the most desirable vineyards adorning the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria.
Carlos San Pedro belongs to a generation of Rioja winemakers, perfectly positioned, who have helped establish the D.O.Ca. Rioja as the leading wine region in the country. Even before the inauguration of Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza in June 2002, San Pedro, owner and technical director of the winery, had all the elements to make his initiative one of the most remarkable on the national scene.
In fact, his first wines benefited from some vines from the Valdepoleo estate, which now takes center stage in our offering: Pujanza Valdepoleo 2021. With an average age approaching half a century, its vineyards, cultivated on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria on clay-limestone soils, cover just over 17 hectares of land situated at an average altitude of 630 meters above sea level.
In appearance, Pujanza Valdepoleo displays a beautiful mature cherry red color with a high layer.
The nose is very elegant and complex. At the forefront, aromas of red and black ripe fruits (strawberries, cherries, and blueberries) appear, along with spicy notes (pepper and bay leaf) and floral hints. Later, touches of cocoa and toasted notes emerge, all in perfect harmony over a subtle tobacco background.
On the palate, its elegance is confirmed, resulting in a flavorful, harmonious wine with body and vigor. It features magnificent smooth and noble tannins, along with an acidity that provides freshness. Its finish is long and persistent, with pleasant reminiscences of bergamot.
Finca Valdepoleo is one of our most emblematic vineyards. Valdepoleo is a clear example of the nature of the area, but with my personal interpretation. From this dual character emerges a fresh, elegant wine with excellent harmony. It comes from a vineyard divided into seven plots, which we work on separately from harvest to the end of barrel aging. It is then, through blind tastings, that we decide the percentage of each plot that will be part of the final blend. This is where its complexity lies.
Behind the name Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza lies one of the most outstanding winemaking projects in the Rioja region, praised by leading national and international critics. Carlos San Pedro leads the operations and winemaking, a man who has managed to combine the viticultural heritage of his ancestors with a modern oenological vision, where the most important thing is to serve the magnificent vineyard he manages in Laguardia.
