When Robert Parker (‘The Wine Advocate’) chose Pruno as the best-value Spanish wine ever, it became one of the most sought-after wines in Spain and an icon of Ribera del Duero. This is the fourth time Finca Villacreces has made a special edition of this label for us: Pruno Red Edition 2022, a red that’s bound to sell out in record time, like its predecessors. What’s more, this 2022 vintage has been awarded 92 Parker points. Essential for understanding what the new Ribera del Duero wines are all about and one of the best-value wines in the world.

Pruno Red Edition 2022 comes from the 82 hectares of vineyards owned by the Pinos Claros estate, located in Quintanilla de Onésimo, in the Golden Mile of Ribera del Duero. The vines have an average age of 23-30 years, with sandy loam soil and yields of 5,000 kg/ha. They’re cultivated using integrated viticulture criteria with organic soil cultivation techniques (plant cover).
This red wine is mainly composed of Tempranillo (93%), expertly enhanced with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon (6%) and Merlot (1%). The grapes were harvested by hand in 15 kg crates. Double sorting of bunches and berries on the sorting table. Destemming without crushing. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks with ‘pissage’ pistons, and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks and oak vats. The wine was finally aged for 10 months in second- and third-year barrels (25% American oak and 75% French oak) (Darnajou, Taransaud, Demptos and Berthomieu).
Finca Villacreces (1994) is located in the municipality of Quintanilla Onésimo (Valladolid) in the grounds of a former abbey and on the strip of land known as the ‘golden mile’ of the Ribera del Duero for its exceptional vineyards. in fact, the vineyards of Finca Villacreces are adjacent to those of Vega Sicilia. Between rows of vines and a century-old pine forest stands the Finca Villacreces winery which processes the grapes grown on its vineyards, which are divided into different plots and cultivated according to organic farming criteria. Pruno is its best known and most international wine.

In 2004, the Artevino group acquired Finca Villacreces, a spectacular estate with centuries of history in a privileged location, within the area known as the ‘Golden Mile’ of Ribera del Duero, with vineyards adjacent to the legendary Vega Sicilia. After the renovation of the existing winery (founded in 1994) and meticulous work on vineyard recovery, Finca Villacreces embarked on a successful journey, becoming one of the most outstanding wineries in Ribera del Duero.
Finca Villacreces boasts 64 hectares of vineyards divided into 15 different plots (based on soil, altitude, exposure, microclimate, vine training systems…), and each variety is cultivated in the site where it best adapts. The main grape is tempranillo, complemented by other French-origin varieties such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot.
Finca Villacreces is part of the Artevino group and produces the brands Pruno (the best Spanish wine under $20 according to guru Robert Parker), Finca Villacreces, and the top-tier Nebro.
