Every personal wine collection should include a good Rueda Verdejo, the most popular Denomination of Origin for white wines. And even more so if it’s the one produced by Protos, a winery that is always synonymous with quality, both in its reds from Ribera del Duero and its whites from Rueda. It’s no coincidence that its Verdejo ranks among the best-sellers each year. Its new vintage, Protos Verdejo 2025, is an essential, versatile wine, perfect for enjoying on any occasion.

Protos Verdejo 2025 is made with 100% Verdejo grape variety, predominantly sourced from vineyards over 15 years old cultivated on typical gravelly and sandy soils of the region. The vines derive from mass selections from La Seca, Nieva, and Martín Sancho, as well as selected clones known for their proven quality.
The harvest was carried out at night to preserve the freshness of the grapes. Skin maceration lasted 4 hours at 10 ºC. Pressing was conducted in an inert atmosphere, followed by static decanting at 10 ºC. Fermentation was controlled at 14 ºC. The resulting wine matured on the lees in stainless steel tanks for approximately 2 months (decided through tank-by-tank tasting) to enhance aromatic complexity, increase mouthfeel structure, and extend longevity.
Bodegas Protos has the distinction of combining prestige and popularity. Founded in 1927 in Peñafiel, in the Ribera del Duero, it has expanded into the nearby D.O. Rueda, where it has chosen to settle in the La Seca region (Valladolid), renowned for the quality of its Verdejo vineyards. With sixteen vintages on the market, its Rueda whites have become a reference point for consumers. Once again, Protos continues at the forefront.
The white wine Protos Verdejo 2025 (D.O. Rueda) is ideal to accompany baked ham with vegetables or grilled white prawns.
Appearance: Straw yellow colour with greenish hues, very clear and bright.
Nose: High intensity with herbaceous notes, white fruit (apple), balsamic, citrus, and a slight touch of apricot.
Palate: Powerful entry, dry and fresh due to its balanced acidity; body and structure from ageing on the lees, with a slightly bitter finish characteristic of Verdejo and long persistence with balsamic and white fruit notes.
Protos was (except for Vega Sicilia) the first winery of Ribera del Duero: founded in 1927 as a cooperative after the union of 11 winegrowers from the area, and one of the wineries that promoted the creation of the Denomination of Origin in Ribera del Duero (1982). Today, it is one of the most important wineries in Spain, and its wines are sold in 100 countries across five continents.
Located in Peñafiel, where the old and new wineries are connected by an underground tunnel. The old winery, exclusively dedicated to aging, has 2 kilometers of underground galleries carved into the mountain on which the castle stands, where the wines are aged under optimal natural conditions. The new facilities, with a spectacular design by the prestigious architect Richard Rogers, place Protos at the forefront of the wine and wine tourism scene. In fact, it is the most visited winery in the D.O. Ribera del Duero and was the first nationally to achieve the "mark of excellence" certificate by the prestigious international body Superbrands. Additionally, in 2013, Protos was recognized as "Winery of the Year" by Wine & Spirit magazine, and in 2022, it was named one of the 50 most admired wineries in the world by the prestigious international organization Drinks International.
Bodegas Protos owns 150 hectares of its own vineyards and also sources from its associates to craft its elegant wines. This carefully managed but extensive viticulture potential allows the allocation of each grape bunch to a specific type of wine. Another cornerstone of its philosophy is the constant renewal of its barrel stock (with a maximum of 4 years). Since 2006, Protos has also been present in the D.O. Rueda, where it produces Verdejo whites following the same high-quality standards. More recently, in 2019, it announced its entry into the D.O. Cigales.
