Soon to complete a century of existence, the iconic Protos is one of the top Ribera del Duero wineries. Its red Protos 27 was launched to commemorate the year it was established and is grown in the best of the winery’s extensive vineyards. Only bunches picked from old Tempranillo vines, selected individually at a sorting table, went into making Protos 27 2022, which also comes from an Excellent-rated vintage. Sixteen months in French oak have further enhanced this red, which oozes elegance and harmony. It comes in a wooden case.

Protos 27 2022 comes from 50-year-old Tinta del País (Tempranillo) vines that lie at an altitude of 850 metres in the province of Burgos, specifically in Anguix, Roa Quintanamanvirgo and La Horra.
The vines are bush-trained with a south-facing orientation and excellent exposure to the sun. The chalky soils poor in organic matter curb growth, producing small yields of only 2,500 kg/ha. These factors are conducive to small bunches with optimal ripening.
In addition, the grapes have high levels of sugars, anthocyanins and polyphenols, which give the wines body and make them ideal for long ageing. The limestone in the soil adds complexity, elegance and velvety tannins to the wines.
The grapes were harvested by hand in small 20-kg crates and the best bunches were chosen individually at a sorting table inside the winery.
Following 10 days of maceration (fermenting with selected native yeasts), the wine was placed in new French oak barrels where it underwent malolactic fermentation. It was then aged for 16 months, being transferred to different one-year old barrels to prevent excessive flavours from the wood and preserve the intense fruity flavours. It was finally matured in the bottle for a year before being released onto the market.
Protos was the first Ribera del Duero winery after Vega Sicilia. Eleven grape growers teamed up to found it in 1927 and it was one of the wineries that promoted the creation of the Denominación de Origen Ribera del Duero back in 1982. It’s located in Peñafiel, where the old winery building stands at the foot of the castle, with its 2 km of galleries dug out of the mountain that provide perfect cellars for ageing wines. It’s connected to Protos’s new facilities, designed by Richard Rogers, by an underground tunnel.
Bodegas Protos know that quality wines require top-quality ingredients. That’s why, although the regulations of the D.O. permit yields of up to 7,000 kg of grapes per hectare of vineyards, Protos establish a maximum of 5,000 kg. They also have a huge grape growing potential that allows them to allocate each bunch to a particular type of wine. Another of the cornerstones of their philosophy is to constantly renew their barrels.
Protos 27 2022 (D.O. Ribera del Duero) is ideal with lamb hotpot or stewed meat.
Deep cherry-red colour with a violet rim, very bright and attractive. Very richly nuanced, with an elegant, aromatic nose, lots of fruit and a fresh, original touch. Complex and expressive. Notable for the intensity of fresh red and black fruit and its dairy and balsamic notes. A very balanced and drinkable wine, with a good acidity that gives it a fresh mouthfeel, and sweet tannins that make for a long and very pleasant finish.
Protos was (except for Vega Sicilia) the first winery of Ribera del Duero: founded in 1927 as a cooperative after the union of 11 winegrowers from the area, and one of the wineries that promoted the creation of the Denomination of Origin in Ribera del Duero (1982). Today, it is one of the most important wineries in Spain, and its wines are sold in 100 countries across five continents.
Located in Peñafiel, where the old and new wineries are connected by an underground tunnel. The old winery, exclusively dedicated to aging, has 2 kilometers of underground galleries carved into the mountain on which the castle stands, where the wines are aged under optimal natural conditions. The new facilities, with a spectacular design by the prestigious architect Richard Rogers, place Protos at the forefront of the wine and wine tourism scene. In fact, it is the most visited winery in the D.O. Ribera del Duero and was the first nationally to achieve the "mark of excellence" certificate by the prestigious international body Superbrands. Additionally, in 2013, Protos was recognized as "Winery of the Year" by Wine & Spirit magazine, and in 2022, it was named one of the 50 most admired wineries in the world by the prestigious international organization Drinks International.
Bodegas Protos owns 150 hectares of its own vineyards and also sources from its associates to craft its elegant wines. This carefully managed but extensive viticulture potential allows the allocation of each grape bunch to a specific type of wine. Another cornerstone of its philosophy is the constant renewal of its barrel stock (with a maximum of 4 years). Since 2006, Protos has also been present in the D.O. Rueda, where it produces Verdejo whites following the same high-quality standards. More recently, in 2019, it announced its entry into the D.O. Cigales.
