Familia Martínez Zabalas (formerly the Faustino group) are one of the leading Spanish winemaking families. They started out in Rioja but have branched out into various Denominaciones. Portia is their Ribera del Duero firm, a spectacular winery building designed by Norman Foster, with an extensive and magnificent vineyard. It’s a privilege for Vinoselección to have them make this label exclusively for us; the first vintage we offered you was that of 2012 and it’s become a classic. Now comes the turn of Portia Selección de Familia 2022, a marvellous single-varietal made from Tempranillo grapes that’s been aged for 10 months in French oak.

General Information

Portia Selección de Familia 2022 was made exclusively for Vinoselección by one of the most spectacular wineries of Ribera del Duero: Portia, located in Gumiel de Izán (Burgos). It’s designed from a selection of the best batches of the 2022 vintage, made wholly from Tempranillo grapes from vines that lie at an altitude of between 750 and 800 metres. It underwent controlled fermentation at 26ºC was aged for 10 months in French oak barrels.

Bodegas Portia is part of the Familia Martínez Zabala group, whose beginnings date back to 1861. With its roots in Rioja, the group gradually grew and established itself in different production areas, expanding into Ribera del Duero in the 1990s, with Portia.

Bodegas Portia’s impressive facilities in Gumiel de Izán (Burgos), in the shape of a three-point star (an image reproduced on the wine’s label  were a milestone in wine architecture. They were designed by British architect Norman Foster, the winner of the Pritzker Prize in 1999 and the Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts in 2009.

Portia’s 160 hectares of vineyards are in some of the most coveted areas of the part of Ribera del Duero that’s located in Burgos, such as Roa, Gumiel del Mercado, Gumiel de Izán and Villanueva.

Portia Selección de Familia 2022 (D.O. Ribera del Duero) goes very well with lamb chops or fillet of pork in a mustard sauce.

Tasting notes

Clean and bright. Purple in colour. Medium pigmentation.

Intense and moreish nose with the presence of fresh black fruit and toasty hints.

Potent and rich on the attack. Maintains good acidity. Lingering touches of toast from barrel ageing. Long finish with hints of nuts (hazelnuts).

Creators' opinion

The 2022 vintage was conditioned by the high temperatures in June, July and August, and by the scarce rainfall. As a result of these two factors the harvest was not quite as good as those of other years. The positive news is the balance between sugar and acidity in the grapes and their excellent health on entering the winery. This made it possible to produce extraordinary wines – whites, rosés and reds. In 2022 harvesting took place 10 to 12 days earlier than the previous year in Ribera del Duero, starting in late September (28 September).

The winery

Bodegas Portia

Bodegas Portia (2010) is the crown jewel of the Faustino Group and the latest winery to join this society. Portia wines represent the “modern Ribera” and are quality benchmarks in this denomination. These wines are characterized by prioritizing fruity character, where the wood is merely a complement. For their production, Portia has an extensive viticultural heritage and, like the rest of the Faustino Group wineries, strives to obtain high-quality raw materials.

Portia boasts impressive facilities designed by Norman Foster in Gumiel de Izán (Burgos). With 12,500 m2 of strict functionality, it features three floors and three arms dedicated to specific functions. In one of them, the winemaking process takes place; in another, fermentation; and in the third, barrel aging. At the central core of the building is the grape reception hopper, shop, tasting room, and auditorium. The greatest treasure of the winery is its vineyards: it owns 250 hectares in the area of Roa, Gumiel de Izán, Villanueva, and Gumiel de Mercado. Among its plots, Finca La Encina in Gumiel de Mercado stands out.
