Great high-altitude Garnacha from the Sierra de Gredos
Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra 2022 is a red wine made from 100% Garnacha, the result of the project by renowned winemaker Telmo Rodríguez and Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz. It is crafted from the Pizarra vineyards in the village of Cebreros (Ávila), at an altitude of up to 950 meters above sea level, in the heart of the Sierra de Gredos. A wine of unique expressiveness, complex, direct, and profound.
Pegaso Barrancos de Pizarra 2022 is a single-varietal Garnacha wine produced in the D.O.P. Cebreros by the Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez. The grapes used to create it come from vineyards located on brown slate slopes, settled on metamorphic rock, at 950 meters altitude in Cebreros (Ávila), in the heart of the Sierra de Gredos.
Telmo Rodríguez and his friend and partner Pablo Eguzquiza have been working on the vineyard since 1992. Together, they form the winery Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez and produce special, terroir-driven wines that convey the modern and natural character of historic vineyards. One of Telmo Rodríguez's key principles is to preserve and care for the local flavors that have been fading over the past decades. One of their goals is to recover forgotten vineyards and identify the best areas in the country to produce potential wines with an international character. This is the case with the Sierra de Gredos and its Pegaso Pizarra.
With traditional and organic viticulture and manual harvesting, Pegaso Pizarra 2022 is made using native yeasts. It undergoes aging for 24-30 months in French oak barrels with capacities of 500 and 400 liters. A red wine perfect for pairing with Iberian cured meats, roasts, stews, and aged cheeses.

Creators' opinion
At Pegaso Pizarra, very selected grapes are used, which is evident in the depth and weight of this wine, intense and harmonious. The slate soils provide a broader and more pleasant texture with integrated and delicate tannins, over a complex and original aromatic expression, marked by notes of scrubland, rockrose, rosemary, and lavender, wrapped in balsamic and mineral sensations.
The winery of the Compañía de Telmo Rodríguez is located on a beautiful estate in Rioja Alavesa called Granja Nuestra Señora de Remelluri, in the municipal district of Labastida. An estate with a rich history. It has evolved from being part of a medieval settlement in the 10th century to a farm run by Hieronymite monks in the 14th century. However, it was in 1968 when a couple, Jaime Rodríguez and Amaya Hernandorena, acquired the estate. During this period, they opted for a more modern and fruit-forward style of wine, quite different from the classic Rioja of the time.
Today, the estate is managed by the second generation, led by the couple's son, Telmo Rodríguez, who, far from settling into the family winery, decided to study and train in Bordeaux and establish his own brand. With it, he produces wines from indigenous varieties in various unique regions of Spain's geography: Rioja, Rueda, Cigales, Toro, Ribera del Duero, Alicante… to name a few. Another of the proposals of the Compañía de Vinos Telmo Rodríguez is to focus particularly on the recovery of forgotten vineyards.

During this time, they have produced special terroir-driven wines that manage to express a modern and natural character from historical vineyards. One of Telmo Rodríguez's guiding principles is to preserve and care for the taste of the region because, according to the winemaker, it had been lost over the past decades: “poor viticulture loses the taste of the place.”
