An iron hand in a velvet glove. This is how Bodegas Rodero defines Pago de Valtarreña 2021, the brilliant result of the combination of the terroir of a unique vineyard and an exceptional vintage.
Pago de Valtarreña 2021 is one of the magnificent signature wines from Bodegas Rodero, a true emblem of the D.O. Ribera del Duero, indulgent and powerful, smooth and, at the same time, velvety.
Made only in exceptional vintages, this limited-production red wine owes its name to the terroir from which it originates, the Pago de Valtarreña, a vineyard planted with tinta del país (tempranillo), whose vines have an average age ranging between 45 and 55 years. The genetic peculiarities of these plants, the special microclimate of the area and that year, and the calcareous clay and fresh sandy soils in which they take root, provided it with exceptional ripeness and gentle tannins. The 24-month aging in French oak barrels further refined it, turning it into an aromatic, structured, and very well-balanced wine, which also hints at a long lifespan.
After many years dedicated to selling his grapes to some of the most renowned wineries in Ribera del Duero, including Vega Sicilia, Carmelo Rodero decided to establish his own brand in 1990. Thus began the successful journey of one of the most important figures in the D.O. Based in the Burgos town of Pedrosa del Duero, Bodegas Rodero grounds its project in a spectacular 140-hectare vineyard, cultivated with the utmost care. In appearance, it shows a clear and bright cherry color, almost without a rim.
On the nose, it unfolds an intense and pleasant range of aromas: from ripe black fruits to toasted notes, leather, and coffee, passing through spices of great intensity and high persistence.
On the palate, it is very meaty, flavorful, velvety, structured, fresh, and balanced. Pleasant notes of blackberry, coffee with milk candies, shady forest, pipe tobacco, and minerals. Very long finish.
The cherry color stands out in a bright wine with aromas of black fruits, spices, and intense coffee. On the palate, it is a fleshy and velvety wine that maintains its freshness and invites you to discover all its particularities.
The 2020 harvest was a long and very challenging campaign, with weather conditions that brought continuous rainy episodes, forcing the harvest to stop on several occasions. However, according to the Ribera del Duero Regulatory Council itself, grapes of excellent quality were harvested. It is clear that 2020 will go down in history as a fateful year, but Pago de Valtarreña 2020 arrives to show us the light amidst so much darkness and remind us that what truly matters is always having small reasons to toast with family.
