Bodegas Obalo seldom make Reservas. We’re talking about a winery based in Sonsierra in Rioja, hailed as one of the greatest wine-producing areas in the world. Obalo Selección Especial Reserva 2018, created entirely from Tempranillo grapes from old vines, is custom made for our members by the winery and Vinoselección’s technical department, making it a real privilege. It’s the result of a selection of vineyards and barrels.

Bodegas Obalo (2006) is owned by Avanteselecta, a group that makes wine in the leading Spanish Denominaciones. It was established with the philosophy of reflecting the essence of old Tempranillo vines located in a what is regarded as one of the best wine regions in the world: in the heart of the Sierra de Cantabria. Obalo Selección Especial Reserva 2018 comes from low-yielding (about 4,000 kg/ha) Tempranillo vines between 40 and 90 years old and has been aged for 15 months in new and single-use French oak barrels.
Bodegas Obalo, founded in 2006, is located at the border between Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, specifically in Ábalos, between the villages of San Vicente de La Sonsierra, Labastida Samaniego and Páganos, the heart of one of the best winegrowing regions in the world. Here the Cantabrian mountains have a beneficial influence, sheltering them from the cold northern winds. Bodegas Obalo work with 42 hectares of Tempranillo vines, mostly old and gobelet-trained. Most of what they produce is sold on the international market.
Obalo Selección Especial Reserva 2018 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is perfect with roast chicken and chips or rice with rabbit and wild mushrooms.
Bodegas Obalo (2006) is a project of Avanteselecta, a wine group that produces wine in the main Spanish designations of origin. It was born with the philosophy of capturing the essence of tempranillo from old vines cultivated in a wine-growing region considered one of the best in the world: in the heart of the Sierra Cantabria, in a locality like Ábalos, among the villages of San Vicente de La Sonsierra, Labastida, Samaniego, or Páganos.
The winery (with modern design and practical, innovative facilities) is located right on the border of La Rioja Alta, although most of its vineyards are in Rioja Alavesa. Obalo has 2 hectares of its own vineyard and 40 hectares of controlled vineyard, all of the tempranillo variety and located on the slopes of the Sierra Cantabria, south-facing, in valley areas, and in the undulations of the landscape, on terraces. These are old bush vines with an age ranging from 40 to 90 years. Bodegas Obalo dedicates most of its production to the international market.
