Marqués de Montalbo Reserva 2018 was grown on gobelet-trained Tempranillo vines over 35 years old in Sonsierra, whose calcareous soils yield grapes with more structure and silkiness, and the upper Najerilla area, where the clay-ferrous soils produce grapes that are fruitier, more acidic and elegant. The result of combining both Tempranillos is simply outstanding.
The grapes were harvested by hand in 200-kg bins and the bunches were sorted on arriving at the winery. After that, the grapes were cold-soaked for 3 days, pumped over and crushed during fermentation at controlled temperatures in stainless steel tanks. This red wine was finally aged for 18 months in French and American oak Bordeaux barrels.
The result, from Bodega KármánWines, is a medium ruby-coloured wine that’s clean and bright. Expressive nose with red fruit (cherries) and dairy notes. Fine and complex. Fresh and supple on the palate, with excellent fruitiness and balance.
Marqués de Montalbo Reserva 2018 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is ideal with barbecued meats, as well as beef stew.
KármánWines is a project supported by Bodegas Gómez Cruzado, which has been developed in parallel since its inception in 2019. The philosophy of KármánWines is based on respect and fidelity to the tradition of fine wines from Rioja Alta. In this way, they manage to produce reds and whites with the soul of yesteryear, using 24 hectares of controlled vineyards.
The KármánWines project is designed with two lines. On one hand, the Kármán Line (70,000 bottles), which features a red and a clarete, both wines without oak aging, highlighting the fruit and freshness of the vineyards in Sierra de la Demanda. On the other hand, Marqués de Montalbo (20,000 bottles), which appeals to the fine wines of Rioja, elegant, fruity, and suitable for aging in barrels and bottles over long periods of time. These wines are completely clean on the nose and well-balanced between fruit and wood. With a medium-high body, they are silky, long-lasting, and faithful to a style that preserves the typicity of the wines from the region.
