Loco 2022 is a pleasant rarity. Bodegas Canopy found in the lands of the D.O. Méntrida a small vineyard of garnacha blanca, a variety practically extinct in the area, and with its fruits they made this wine, halfway between madness and genius.

General Information

Loco 2022 is a wine that perfectly embodies the philosophy of Bodegas Canopy. Since its founding in 2004, the firm has been one of the staunchest advocates for the recovery of the Garnacha from the central peninsula. This, our freshest, most elegant, seductive, and subtle indigenous variety, is the star of six of the seven single-varietals produced at its facilities in the town of Camarena, Toledo. However, the one suggested by the Club on this occasion is, without a doubt, the most special of all.

Indeed, Loco 2022 is a unique wine in the D.O. Méntrida, born from a handful of 65-year-old white Garnacha vines planted in sandy soils, occupying barely half a hectare. The high sensitivity to high temperatures and humidity makes the cultivation and production of this variety very challenging, hence its scarcity.

With the utmost care and attention, Bodegas Canopy selected the best grapes for Loco Blanco, chosen one by one on the sorting table. These were macerated on their skins, cold, for 24 hours. Half of the obtained must was fermented in French oak barrels, and the other half in stainless steel tanks at a temperature of 10 ºC. The wine was refined after 6 months of aging on its fine lees with batonnage. All this effort is worth it in the glass, where this magnificent single-varietal white displays all its freshness and silkiness. Not to be missed.

Tasting notes

Loco boasts a bright and clean straw yellow color.

On the nose, it surprises us with its subtle and elegant aromas of fresh grass, hinojo, and hay, along with hints of peach and white flowers (chamomile), complemented by mineral, smoky, and spicy notes.

On the palate, it is fresh and silky. The aromas discovered on the nose return to the mouth, accompanied by pleasant bakery notes. Complex, long, broad, and persistent.

The winery

Bodegas Canopy is a young winery founded in 2004 in Camarena (Toledo), the result of the initiative of Belarmino Fernández and Alfonso Chacón, two winemaker friends with extensive professional experience in the wine world as well as the business and hospitality sectors.

With the idea of rediscovering for the public the historic terroir encompassed by the D.O. Méntrida, they began searching for old garnacha vineyards, the dominant variety in the area, and modern plantations of the foreign syrah variety on which to base their project.

Currently, Bodegas Canopy owns a total of 19 hectares of vineyards: 11 hectares of garnacha vines aged between 40 and 90 years, located in the area of El Real de San Vicente; and the remaining 8 hectares of syrah, between 16 and 20 years old, are planted in trellis on sandy soils in the same municipality of Camarena. All the vineyards of this Toledo-based winery are cultivated following the principles of organic viticulture, respecting to the fullest the particularities of each variety.

The winemaking process at Canopy includes a selection table, the traditional grape treading, cold pre-fermentation maceration, early racking, malolactic fermentation, and aging in barrels of various sizes. Canopy’s production is based on the utmost respect for the grapes in the winery. Under the D.O. Méntrida, the winery markets six single-varietal red wines: Tres Patas, Malpaso, La Viña Escondida, Congo, Castillo de Belarfonso, and Loco.
