Next to the city of Valladolid, part of the Denominación de Origen Cigales, stands La Legua, one of the most important wineries in this production area, responsible for revitalizing the geographical indication and championing quality red wines when the hallmark of the region was still claretes.
A family-run winery, its origins trace back to Emeterio Fernández Marcos, a neurologist by profession and a passionate viticulture enthusiast, who in 1969 acquired the estate, betting on a pioneering methodology in the region. To begin with, he undertook the restructuring of the vineyard, uprooting nearly all the old vines, planting trellised vines, and placing each variety in the location where it would best express itself. This effort culminated in 1997, when La Legua inaugurated new facilities, built over the tunnels of the old century-old winery, and began marketing its wines, primarily based on the strong personality developed by the tempranillo variety in these gravelly and alluvial soils.
From this invaluable estate, we present to you La Legua 50 Veranos Edición Especial 2021, an exclusive red wine for Vinoselección, crafted from a selection of the best tempranillo clusters grown on the 80 hectares of vineyards at Finca La Legua.
It displays a cherry red color with hints of maroon.
The nose is very expressive and intense, highlighting aromas of ripe red and black fruits (blueberries and raspberries), which give way to spicy and floral sensations, hints of wild herbs, and coffee bean; all set against a background of noble and fine woods.
On the palate, it shows very good balance, being flavorful and enjoying a fine tannin. The journey is aromatic, fresh, and fluid. The finish unfolds long and persistent, with a pleasant balsamic background.
The La Legua estate is home to the vineyards and the family winery of the same name, located 6 km – one league – from Valladolid. With a centuries-old history, the new chapter of the La Legua estate began in 1969, when Emeterio Fernández Marcos, a neurologist and psychiatrist from Valladolid, passionate about the countryside and agriculture, acquired the estate, believing in its potential to produce high-quality red wines.
In the 1980s, he undertook the restructuring of the vineyard, uprooting almost all the old vines (which mixed varieties within the same plot) and planting trellised vines in single-variety plots. In 1997, La Legua inaugurated new facilities built over the tunnels of the estate's existing centuries-old winery, and in the same year produced its first vintage using its own vineyard, which had already reached the appropriate age.
Today, the La Legua estate encompasses 80 hectares of vineyards aged between 28 and 35 years, divided into 7 plots. Depending on the type of soil, a specific grape variety is cultivated in each plot. Exclusively using these own vineyards (85% Tempranillo, 8% Garnacha Tinta, and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon), La Legua produces red wines and a rosé under the D.O. Cigales.
