Pagos de Viña Real was the first wine produced at the Viña Real winery in Laguardia, with the 2001 vintage, striving for excellence in Rioja Alavesa's tempranillo. Made from the small plot La Virgen, in San Cristóbal (Labastida), from which it takes its name, La Virgen AKA Pagos de Viña Real 2021 is crafted from 40-year-old estate-grown tempranillo vines and aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.
La Virgen AKA Pagos de Viña Real 2021 is a 'top' wine from one of the most established wineries in Rioja Alavesa. It is crafted from the finest hand-picked Tempranillo clusters, selected from the 2-hectare vineyard La Virgen, located in the Labastida area. After a second selection process at the winery, the semi-crushed grapes fermented with native yeasts at a controlled temperature in small stainless steel tanks, with daily punch-downs. Following the precise moment of racking, determined by tastings, the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels where it aged for 12 months, with periodic batonnages, until its clarification and bottling.
The Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (CVNE) is a century-old winery of international prestige, an ambassador of Rioja wines and a specialist in long aging. CVNE launched the first Viña Real wines to the market in 1920. Since 2004, the Viña Real range has had its own independent winery, showcasing modernity in contrast to the classicism of the parent house.
The Viña Real wines are made exclusively with grapes from Rioja Alavesa. In the words of María Larrea, Technical Director of the CVNE Group, “The personality of Viña Real wines is due to the location of this region in an Atlantic-Mediterranean transition zone, which provides the vineyard with excellent climatic conditions. The south-facing orientation of the vineyard, nestled on the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria, maximizes sunlight, and we benefit from clay-limestone soils that are excellent for vine cultivation.”
La Virgen AKA Pagos de Viña Real 2021 is a red wine with great aromatic intensity and complexity, a smooth and balanced palate, and a touch of acidity that gives it length and freshness. Enjoy it.

Creators' opinion
La Virgen AKA Pagos de Viña Real presents, visually, a deep high layer of garnet color with violet reflections. It offers great intensity on the nose and a wide range of aromas where notes of fresh red and black fruits (forest fruits, blueberries, raspberries, blackberries) stand out, followed by hints of licorice and subtle aromas acquired during its time in the barrel such as spices, smoky notes, roasted and balsamic touches. Its entry on the palate is smooth, and its passage is marked by tannins perfectly balanced with its creaminess and a touch of acidity that provides freshness and length.
Behind Viña Real stands one of the most solid names in the Rioja wine scene with significant international projection: CVNE (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España). The renowned French architect on the global stage, Philippe Mazières, was the person chosen by its leaders to capture the aesthetics of this century-old winemaking house in the new Viña Real winery, established in Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa). Its philosophy was to seek a unique style that respected the winery's hallmarks, with a subtler character, evoking a more “Burgundian” profile in this new initiative.
CVNE (Haro, Rioja Alta) first launched the Viña Real brand on the market in 1920; however, at the end of the 20th century, it conceived the idea of creating a dedicated winery for this range and chose the subzone of Rioja Alavesa for this new project. Thus, the history of the Viña Real winery is relatively short: its facilities were inaugurated in 2004.
Viña Real combines tradition and modernity in its spectacular facilities made of concrete, wood, and stainless steel. This new building stands out visually for the enormous vat that dominates its structure, a space dedicated to winemaking. Next to it, two tunnels have been carved into the rock of Cerro de la Mesa (Rioja Alavesa), where the winery is located, designed for the aging of wines: one for barrels and another for bottles.
