Named in honor of the year the winery was founded, Godeval 1986 2018 is possibly one of the best aged godellos in the national scene. Sourced from a meticulous selection of godello grapes from Godeval's own vineyards in Xagoaza (Ourense), it is a white wine fermented in new French oak barrels, where it was later aged on its lees for four months to achieve its final refinement.

General Information

In the quest to diversify and offer a new quality wine, the Galician winery Bodegas Godeval decided in 2017 to produce Godeval 1986 2018, a barrel-aged white wine made from 100% godello, fermented in French oak barrels and aged on its fine lees for 4 months in the same wood. The grapes used to create this godello come from vineyards over 30 years old, located at 470 meters above sea level in the Pancho estate, in the Xagoaza area.

The name of this wine pays homage to the founding year of Bodegas Godeval. A winery that began its journey with just 2 hectares of vineyards and now has over 25 hectares, producing more than 150,000 liters of wine. From its inception, Godeval set out to recover the godello grape variety in the Valdeorras region and to produce high-quality wines made entirely from this aromatic and pleasant white grape.

With very limited production, this white wine from the D.O. Valdeorras is considered one of the best barrel-aged whites in Spain, thanks to its exceptional qualities and its aging in wood. Godeval 1986 2018 is ideal to pair with seafood, fish, lightly seasoned meats, mushrooms, and mild cheeses.

The winery

Bodegas Godeval

Bodegas Godeval was founded in 1986 with the aim of producing a unique single-varietal wine made entirely from the godello grape variety. This is how the Galician winery began, with just 2 hectares of vineyard and producing 18,000 bottles of the now well-known Viña Godello. Today, the winery from Ourense produces its wines with the same dedication with which they started more than 30 years ago, with the goal of reviving the white godello variety, under the D.O. Valdeorras.

The winery is located in the Xagoaza area (O Barco), where the medieval architectural work of the Monastery of Xagoaza is situated. Current needs led to the expansion of the facilities in 2009, with the construction of a new winery, combining tradition and modernity in one place.

Alongside the construction of the winery, Godeval is equipped with the most modern technology for wine production, allowing an annual production of 150,000 liters made from grapes grown in its own vineyards. Similarly, the winery has expanded its plantations to reach 25 hectares of vineyards, always seeking slate soils with slopes and southern orientation, ideal for the healthy growth of the godello vine.

Bodegas Godeval produces exquisite wines, with a broad and highly distinctive palate. The revived godello grape and the various distinctive features surrounding its production result in exceptional white wines with intense fruity aromas (peach and apple), floral and herbal notes, and hints of anise and mint. On the palate, they are particularly pleasant, with an excellent balance provided by good acidity, which brings freshness, along with mineral notes derived from the slate soil from which they originate.

Today, Bodegas Godeval wines can be found across the globe. Around 30% of their production is destined for export. As early as 1989, they were the first to export godello wine to the U.S., and they currently sell in countries such as England, the Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Canada, Puerto Rico, Panama, Poland… and many more.
