Generación MC 2021 is a limited-edition red wine made by Marqués de Cáceres. It was grown on small plots located in the best parts of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, planted with old Tempranillo vines aged between 65 and 90 years old.
In 1970, under the direction of famous winemaker Emile Peynaud, Enrique Forner founded Bodegas Marqués de Cáceres following his previous experience at the Bordeaux firm Château Camensac. Currently run by his daughter Cristina Forner, the firm now has as its winemaking advisor another Frenchman, Michel Rolland. It sells its wine in more than 150 countries and is one of the best ambassadors of Rioja wines.
Marqués de Cáceres developed a new style in Rioja, breaking with the tradition of ageing wine in old barrels for long periods and adopting instead new oak and shorter and more respectful ageing to produce more fruit-forward wines in which the wood is simply a component that adds complexity. The firm has followed these guidelines for decades now, resulting in a current range of wines that are extremely elegant.
The best example of this evolution is Generación MC 2021: a red with a powerful personality, an ideal way of savouring the wines of one of the most internationally famous Spanish wineries. Made exclusively from sensational vintages, this is a signature wine with highly concentrated colours, the fruitiest and most modern and powerful version made by the Rioja firm. A real gem of a wine.
Generación MC’s deep maroon colour denotes the intensity of its aromas and palate. Deep, complex nose with prominent notes of black fruit and subtle spices (red pepper, vanilla) against a background of fine, toasted oak. Full, flavourful palate with enveloping ripe tannins and rich, dense fruit. Great overall complexity. Long and elegant, with all the qualities of well-tamed, highly talented youth.
The origins of Marqués de Cáceres date back to the late 1960s, when the Valencian Enrique Forner decided to apply in Rioja the winemaking knowledge he had acquired in Bordeaux during his time at Château Camensac. To carry out his project, Forner sought the advice of the renowned oenologist Émile Peynaud.
The first measure taken by the Valencian was to convince the local grape growers from whom he purchased grapes that he only wanted healthy and ripe fruit. He then built a winery equipped with the most modern technology and revolutionized Rioja's winemaking tradition by implementing shorter aging periods than usual, using French oak barrels. Enrique Forner passed away in 2011, but today it is his daughter Cristina who, accompanied by a select group of professionals, keeps one of Spain's most prestigious Rioja wineries at the top.
In 2014, Marqués de Cáceres expanded its operations to the D.O. Rueda, acquiring 125 hectares of vineyards in La Seca and Serrada, planted with the verdejo and sauvignon blanc varieties. They also built a winery there. In 2019, they extended their reach to the D.O. Ribera del Duero, where they own the Finca La Capilla winery.
