Flor de Silos 2019 is born from an Excellent vintage in the D.O. Ribera del Duero. It comes from a parcel of tempranillo (tinto fino) vines planted between 1927 and 1930, with very low yields, barely 2500 kilos per hectare, at an elevated altitude of 900 m and with sandy and very poor soils, where the tempranillo offers seductive mineral notes. It is aged for 14 to 18 months in French oak barrels.
The love, respect, and attachment of a family to the vineyard form the story of Cillar de Silos (1994). Established in the Burgos municipality of Quintana del Pidio, this winery was founded by Amalio Aragón, who in the 1970s, against the trend of his fellow countrymen, began to gather the best parcels of old tempranillo vineyards in the area, instead of uprooting them and dedicating the land to other crops. A privileged area for this variety, located at an altitude close to 900 meters, which guaranteed a slow and ideal ripening for the fruit of the vine.
With these foundations, it was still necessary to wait until the 1995 harvest for the first wines of Cillar de Silos to see the light. Since then, the winery has not stopped growing in quality and recognition.
Flor de Silos 2019 (D.O. Ribera del Duero) is ideal to pair with big game, noble birds, Castilian roasts, semi-cured cheeses, mushroom dishes, or as a wine to enjoy after a meal.
Cillar de Silos (1994) has earned its place among the greats of Ribera del Duero. This family winery reflects the personality of the Castilian landscape and embodies the essence of the magnificent vineyards located in the Burgos area of Quintana del Pidio, north of Aranda del Duero. From the beginning, their red wines have been endorsed by the most renowned critics, such as Robert Parker.
The founder of the winery was Amalio Aragón, who, during the 1970s and against the grain of his fellow locals, began acquiring the best plots of old tempranillo vineyards in an area located at an altitude ranging from 840 to 900 meters. This borderline area for vine cultivation, combined with the poor soils dominated by limestone and clay where the vines take root, profoundly enhances a fresher, more elegant, and fruitier profile of the tempranillo vineyards that this winery masters so well.
Amalio's children, Roberto (management and commercialization), Amelia (export), and Óscar (viticulture manager), joined their father in this winemaking venture, taking over the leadership of a house that has continuously invested in the improvement of vineyards and facilities. In less than three decades, Cillar de Silos has become a benchmark of modernity, a champion of the new Ribera del Duero.
Additionally, Cillar de Silos boasts a network of tunnels dating back to the late 16th century. These tunnels have been restored and connected to revive the area's tradition and benefit from natural conditions of constant humidity and temperature, which are exceptional for wine preservation in bottles. From these underground cellars, wine supplies were already being provided to the order of the Monastery of Silos during the 17th century.
