Álvaro Palacios no longer needs an introduction: he is an established figure in the wine world, boasting an impressive list of awards and international prestige forged in regions like Priorat and Bierzo. Since the year 2000, he has also been leading the family project Palacios Remondo, where he imprints his personal touch and passion for ‘terroir.’ One of his most emblematic wines is Finca La Montesa, a Rioja with great commercial potential and an excellent quality-price ratio. We present the new vintage: Finca La Montesa 2021, made with Garnacha from old, organic vines cultivated in the namesake estate at the foot of Monte Yerga (Alfaro), where this variety is deeply rooted.

General Information

The grapes that nourish Finca La Montesa 2021 come from the La Montesa vineyard, specifically from the areas of Valtomelloso, Valfrio, and Valviejo, located on the slopes of Mount Yerga, at an altitude of 550 m, in Alfaro. These are old garnacha vines (36 years old), certified for organic farming, traditionally cultivated with low yields, hand-harvested, and meticulously selected.

Fermentation took place in stainless steel vats, with native yeasts. The subsequent aging process was carried out for 12 months in barrels.

Bodegas Palacios Remondo is the home of Álvaro Palacios, creator of the legendary L'Ermita. Founded in 1945 by his father, José Palacios Remondo (fifth family generation), the winery is located in the center of Alfaro (D.O.Ca. Rioja), and its vineyards extend at the foothills of the Yerga mountain range, at a maximum altitude of 550 meters.

In the year 2000, after the passing of José Palacios Remondo, Álvaro Palacios returned to take over the technical direction of the winery. Since then, the style of winemaking has evolved towards the concept of single-vineyard wines. The focus is on respecting the terroir and the vineyard, advocating for natural viticulture and artisanal winemaking.

Finca La Montesa 2021 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) pairs perfectly with grilled Iberian pork shoulder or verdinas with oxtail.

The winery

Bodegas Palacios Remondo is the home of Álvaro Palacios. Founded in 1945 by José Palacios Remondo, father of the creator of the legendary L'Ermita, the winery boasts a family tradition of 150 years linked to viticulture in Rioja Baja.

The winery is located in the center of Alfaro (D.O.Ca. Rioja), and its 110 hectares of vineyards stretch at the foothills of the Sierra de Yerga. The red garnacha, tempranillo, mazuelo, graciano, and viura vines are cultivated in the unique sites of Valfrío, Valviejo, and Valtomelloso, within the La Montesa estate, as well as in Las Mulgas and Quiñón Valmira. All of these are situated at a maximum altitude of 550 meters above sea level and are characterized by rugged, clay-limestone soils, which impart a distinctive mineral touch to the wines.

In the year 2000, after the passing of José Palacios Remondo, Bodegas Palacios Remondo began a new chapter with the return of his son Álvaro to the technical direction of the family business. Since then, the style of winemaking has evolved towards the concept of single-vineyard wines. The focus is on respecting the terroir and the vineyard, advocating for natural viticulture and artisanal winemaking, without chemicals or foreign yeasts, with red garnacha as the star variety.
